PREGNANCY RELATED PAIN

Pregnancy is a time of large change, growth and development. Whilst this is a positive and wonderful thing, it is not without its drawbacks. Expectant mothers may feel growing discomfort in various parts of their body, including but not limited to: lower back, middle back, hips, neck and legs.

As the baby develops, the mother’s uterus expands, which can shift their centre of gravity, placing extra strain and load on the muscles of the hips, lower back and middle back. This may then begin to cause musculoskeletal pain and fatigue.

Gentle Osteopathic treatment may benefit the mother by reducing localised muscle tension, restoring motion to stiff joints, and improve breathing mechanics. Research by Liddle & Pennick (2015) found that osteopathic treatments significantly reduced low back pain and improved functional disability. Further evidence supports osteopathic treatment for low back pain and pelvic girdle pain during and post pregnancy (Franke et. al, 2017)
